Dr Matthew Lau

Orthodontist

 

Dr Matthew Lau is an Orthodontist practicing at Royce Dental Surgery, Parkway Parade branch.He graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2012. Following his graduation, Dr Lau served at various public institutions including National Dental Centre Singapore, Bright Vision Hospital, Hougang Polyclinic, Changi General Hospital and Health Promotion Board School Dental Service. Through these postings, he discovered his passion for Orthodontics and applied successfully for postgraduate studies in 2014. He completed the program and received his Masterof Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) and Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2017.

 

Dr Lau then went on to serve in the Orthodontic Department at NDCS, treating a wide variety of cases including interceptive and growth modification treatment for young children, surgical orthodontic treatment for patients with jaw deformities, and metal braces and clear aligner treatment. He has special interest in digital orthodontics, and is an accredited Invisalign provider. Dr Lau was also awarded the Singapore Health Quality Service Award in 2019, a testament to his commitment towards his patients. Dr Lau was the Honorary Secretary, Association of Orthodontists (Singapore), 2023-2025.

 

Apart from his clinical duties, Dr Lau enjoys research into new technologies which will have clinical applications. As Principal Investigator, his team was awarded a $50,000 Duke-NUS Clinical Innovation Support Programme Grant (2019-2021) to develop “Novel short-wavelength ultraviolet light-emittingdiode based SMART disinfection chamber for dental impression materials and its clinical use”.

 

An avid author, Dr Lau publishes and reviews scientific articles in various reputable international journals. Some of his notable publications include “Comprehensive orthodontic treatment in an adolescent patient with Class II Division 1 malocclusion and ankylosed maxillary central incisors” in APOS Trends in Orthodontics (2019), and “The role of dentists in COVID-19 is beyond dentistry: voluntary medical engagements and future preparedness” in Frontiers in Medicine (2020). He also regularly participates in local and international conferences,and has presented scientific posters at the British Orthodontic Conference (London, 2018) and American Association of Orthodontics Annual Session (2019, Los Angeles, California).

 

Dr Lau currently maintains active professional memberships with the Singapore Dental Association, Association of Orthodontists Singapore, and World Federation of Orthodontists.

 

Outside of his professional commitments, Dr Lau enjoys serving in his local grassroots community,and going on road trips. He aspires to travel better for less, and is still learning the best strategy to accumulate airline miles.
