What is Wisdom Teeth Surgery?

Your wisdom teeth, also called your third molars, are the very last teeth at the back of your mouth. They usually come in much later than any of your other teeth— between ages 18 to 24 years.

Most adults have a total of 4 wisdom teeth in total, with two at the top and two at the bottom.

Do I need Wisdom Tooth Surgery?

You may need a wisdom teeth surgery if you experience the following:

  • Red or swollen gums or bleeding gums
  • Swelling around the jaw
  • Bad breath
  • An unpleasant taste in your mouth

We will recommend that you speak to one of our Specialists if you are experiencing the above symptoms, to see if you need to remove your wisdom teeth.

When should I be removing my Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth can lead to problems if they erupt in wrong positions due to lack of space.

Your wisdom teeth may also be impacted, which means they are trapped in your jaw or under your gums. This makes them more difficult to clean, develops food traps and will lead to the following problems:

  1. The gums covering the impacted wisdom teeth get infected and become swollen. This is a painful condition called ‘pericoronitis’.
  2. They cause decay on the second molar tooth in front.
  3. Teeth in front become crowded.
  4. They can develop into cysts causing damage to the neighbouring teeth.

Treatment Procedure

1) Full Consultation by our Specialist & X-rays

One of our experienced specialists will do a thorough examination to determine if your wisdom tooth requires a surgery to remove.

An x-ray will also be taken to check the position of the wisdom tooth and its proximity to surrounding structures.

Our Specialist will also explain the risks and benefits of wisdom teeth removal, walk you through the entire treatment process, and advise you on the fees involved.

2) Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

If a surgery is needed, it is usually performed under local anaesthesia. Intravenous sedation administered by a qualified anaesthetist can be arranged, if required.

There are other pain relief options available such as general anaesthesia.

3) Post-Operative Care

After the wisdom tooth has been removed, the wound will be stitched together. Antibiotics and painkillers will be prescribed to ease any pain after the procedure.

During the healing period, you should maintain good oral hygiene – brush and floss. Do avoid vigorous rinsing, smoking, alcohol and strenuous activities for at least a few days after the procedure to minimize the risk of any complications.

Medisave Subsidies Available

The cost of wisdom teeth treatment will depend on the procedure a patient undergoes. Therefore, an initial consultation and x-rays are required to determine if you will require an extraction or a surgery.

If a surgery is required, a portion or all of your wisdom teeth surgery fees can be claimed from your Medisave, depending on the complexity of the surgery. Do consult our clinic staff to find out about other flexible payment options too.
